Back in the city, I took Amber to dinner, then dropped her at the Jepson’s’ mansion. Standing in their driveway, I hugged her briefly, then kissed her. Her face tilted up to mine; she opened her mouth for a tender yet passionate tongue to tongue kiss, her pert breasts full against my chest.

Naturally, my manhood rose to the occasion, but I stifled the urge to ask her to bed. Too soon, way too soon. I distracted my throbbing needs by thinking of Johnny as I released her mouth from mine yet continued to hold her in my arms.

“Can I see you tomorrow?” I asked.

“I’d like that.”

“How about going downtown,” I suggested. “Window shopping, lunch in a nice sidewalk café.”

“Sounds perfect.” Amber lifted herself up onto her toes to plant a firm kiss to my lips. “Will you pick me up, or should I meet you?”

“I’ll pick you up at ten,” I replied, wanting her in bed so very badly. “So, what’s Johnny’s address?”

Amber settled back down onto her feet, dropping her arms from around my neck. “I wish you wouldn’t confront him.”

“Don’t worry,” I said lightly. “I won’t hurt him. Badly.”

At least that brought a laugh. I plugged his address into the GPS system in my phone as she told me where he lived.

“Just be careful, okay?”

“I will.” I kissed the tip of her nose. “See you tomorrow.”

“Okay.”

Amber stood by the car, watching me get in. Lifting her hand, she waved as I drove away, and in the mirror, I watched as she went into the massive house. The phone’s imitation female voice began instructions on how to get to Johnny’s apartment.

Naturally, given it was a Saturday night, there was a good chance he wouldn’t be home when I got there. I felt so certain he wouldn’t be, the sight of a red Challenger under a car port actually surprised me. I parked beside it in the allotted slot for guests, then headed up to his apartment.

He answered my knock clad in a pair of baggy shorts and nothing else. I sized him up as he gazed at me with a lifted brow, inquiringly. Instantly, I recognized my own kind—a dragon shifter. If he also recognized me as such, he showed no indication of it.

“Can I help you?” he drawled, scratching his bare chest.

“I hope so,” I replied, observing the arrogance in his body language, my shit doesn’t stink attitude. I disliked him immediately, and not necessarily because of Amber. I recalled his edginess when he called to ask me to find Amber. “I’m Lincoln Sheraton.”

For a moment, his brows lowered in confusion as he tried to place my name. Then he brightened. “Oh, yeah. The lawyer. Change your mind about finding my lady for me?”

“No, sorry,” I answered.

“Then what are you doing here, man?”

“To politely ask you to leave her alone.”

“What are you talking about?”

Johnny’s face darkened in anger, scowling in jealous possessiveness. If I hadn’t been on equal footing with him, his nasty expression might have been intimidating. I met his hot gaze without blinking, as much an alpha male as he was.
